Baby brain: parental influence limited

Welcome to your child's brainDid you do flashcards with your baby? Did you play Baby Einstein videos to their glazed infant gaze? Was the nursery painted in synapse-stimulating primary colours? Nah, me neither, but I thought about it. And felt guilty for not doing it. I even bought the flashcards! Good news…

According to the Courier-Mail, our effect on our child’s intelligence and brain development is miniscule. Phew! All those flash cards left untouched in the box haven’t resulted in a dumber kid!

Apparently, children are born “hard-wired for learning” and as long as we don’t get in the way, they’ll do OK.  The information is contained in a new book called, Welcome to your child’s brain due for release in May. The book is written by neuroscientists Sandra Aamodt and Sam Wang. So they’d probably know. And they’ve done some research too.

Have you ever been more relieved in your life? Me neither.

Now I’m off to find something new to guilt myself silly about!
